The region offers a complete travel experience, blending delicious food with a profound appreciation for the environment. Whether you're drawn to the lake, the mountains, or the serene alpine pastures, you'll find a sense of belonging here. For adventurous souls, there are three fantastic hiking routes that truly bring the essence of this place to life.
1. The Sentiero della Noce (Walnut Trail) in Comano
Nestled in the picturesque Comano area, the Sentiero della Noce is a delightful thematic route. It's an easy to moderate hike, situated at an elevation of around 600 meters above sea level. The trail begins in Santa Croce del Bleggio, a charming small village in Garda Trentino recognized among the "Borghi più belli d'Italia". This path has been recently revitalized through a collaborative effort involving local tourism bodies, the municipality, an Ecomuseum, and the Confraternita della Noce del Bleggio.
The star of this trail is the Bleggio Walnut. This particular cultivar has a history stretching back to Roman times and is today a Slow Food Presidium, recognized for its sweet and aromatic flavor with hints of spicy notes. As you wander, you'll encounter seven informative panels illuminating the cultural and economic significance of this crop.
- Location: Comano area, starting from Santa Croce del Bleggio.
- Elevation: Approximately 600m a.s.l.
- Highlights: Slow Food-recognized walnut cultivar, historical rural villages, terraced fields, and traditional dry-stone walls.
2. The Sentiero dell’Olivo (Olive Trail) in Arco
In the renowned area of Arco, a place synonymous with Garda Trentino's beauty, lies the Sentiero dell’Olivo. This is a simple yet captivating loop trail, set at about 90 meters above sea level. It winds its way through ancient olive groves, a testament to the long-standing relationship between the olive tree and the unique microclimate of Northern Lake Garda.
The beauty of these trees inspired many writers during the Grand Tour era, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. During his Italian Journey (Italienische Reise), his time in the Alto Garda region deeply influenced his literary works. The trail features fourteen points of interest designed to deepen your understanding of the landscape geology and local products.
- Key Product: The Extra Virgin Olive Oil Garda Trentino DOP.
- Local Tradition: Look for mòlche, a rich paste derived from the olive pressing process, traditionally used in the local "Pan de molche".
- Points of Interest: Medieval Arco castle views, geological installations, and thousand-year-old trees.
3. Ascent to Monte Stivo in the Ledro Alps
For those seeking more challenging terrain and panoramic vistas, the ascent to Monte Stivo in the Ledro Alps is an absolute must. Standing at 2,059 meters above sea level, Monte Stivo offers a 360-degree mountain panorama encompassing the Adamello-Presanella, the Brenta Dolomites (UNESCO World Heritage), and the Marmolada.
Both paths lead to the Rifugio Stivo – Prospero Marchetti, a mountain hut built between 1905 and 1906. It's dedicated to one of the founders of the SAT (Società Alpinisti Tridentini), established in 1872. Along these routes, you will encounter traces of the World War I front lines, remnants of the battles fought between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Available Routes:
- The Classic Trail: Starts from Sant'Antonio (Passo Bordala). Medium difficulty, approx. 4 hours, 9.7 km with 850m elevation gain.
